Knowing how to treat gingivitis

Did you know that gingivitis is a symptom that a person has a poor dental hygiene? Poor dental or oral hygiene is marked with bad breath and reoccurrence of mouth sores.  Many dental patients put less importance when experiencing the first stage of gum disease.  They thought that it is just a simple dental problem that can be resolve by simple brushing their teeth.  Many do not know that gum disease originated from the process alone.  When you frequently forget to brush your teeth plaques begin to accumulate in your teeth and gums. Moreover, improper brushing can lead to gum problems such as gingivitis.

What are the signs and symptoms of gingivitis? There are actually three manifestations that a person is experiencing gingivitis.  First, your gums are appearing purple or bright red.  Second, gums are swollen or bloated. Lastly, gums become sensitive.  If you have all these signs then most probably you are soon to suffer gingivitis.  However, you do not have to worry because there are ways to treat this type of gum problem.

There are simple and less inexpensive ways of treating gingivitis.  Just have to be diligent and determine to eradicate this gum problem in your system.  First as a patient, you must understand the cause of gum disease that is the build up of bad bacteria in your teeth and mouth due to lack of dental hygiene.  The next step will be easy since you have a background of the issue.

Here are few tips on how to treat gingivitis:

a.       Brush your teeth twice a day preferably day and night.  It is also recommended to use soft-bristled toothbrush for a gentler brushing procedure.  Hence, your gums are sensitive use toothpaste for sensitive teeth to ease the discomfort you are feeling everytime you eat or drink.

b.      Rinse antiseptic mouthwash twice a day. Rinsing mouthwash once in a while will help freshen up your breath. Furthermore, it eliminates bad breath.  It is not recommended to rinse fluoride mouthwash because of its chemical content that can harm your body.  Habitually using this type of mouthwash may lead to teeth discoloration, joint problems and osteoporosis.

c.       Use dental floss to clean your teeth.  Whenever your dental tools such as your toothpaste and toothbrush are unavailable, you can alternatively use dental floss to remove particles in between your teeth.  This is safer compared to toothpicks.  Just make sure you know how to use it properly. There won’t be any problem.

Although sad but true, a lot of people or a huge percentage of humans around the world suffer from an oral health problem that we all refer to as gingivitis.  This goes to show that this particular disease is quite too common among us.  A lot of medications and resolutions have been innovated to treat this disease but ironically, still a lot of people become victimized by it.  Despite its commonality, a lot of people are totally ignorant of what the disease is all about.  By this we mean that not everyone knows the symptoms, causes, and other treatments for gingivitis.  This is why, according to a research somewhere, almost eighty percent of adults catch gingivitis.

The only thing that can cause gingivitis is simply bacteria.  Now, there are various types of bacteria existing inside our body.  Lactobacillus, for example, is a form of bacteria that plays a vital role in human digestion.  Those kinds of microorganisms are usually referred to as good bacteria.  They do not cause any harm or complications; instead they help us in maintaining our health.  Bad bacteria, like plaque and tartar, are the ones that cause gingivitis.  We get these from the leftovers of the food that we ate that are stuck in our mouth for a long time.  When we do not rinse our mouth regularly, bad bacteria tend to propagate and their replication can cause a lot of damage to our oral cavity’s vital parts.

To treat gingivitis, you need to get rid of its cause.  As mentioned earlier, bad bacteria (in the form of plaque and tartar) cause gingivitis.  How do you get rid of it?  Regular oral hygiene habits should be kept at consistent levels to do so.  Brush your teeth at least twice a day.  If a tooth brush is unavailable, a dental floss would be an ideal substitute.  Just make sure that you keep on cleaning your mouth and gingivitis would not be much of an issue.  This is also an effective way to prevent gingivitis from coming back.

There are also other alternative healing procedures for this disease.  You can use medication, especially if the case is quite worse.  Natural remedies are readily available as well; they can be also used for resolving your problems.  But most importantly, you need to seek help from your dentist.  Make your consultations more regular in order to be able to figure out for yourself if you have been taking good care of your teeth.
