The Real Score about Gingivitis and What You Need to Know About It

Although sad but true, a lot of people or a huge percentage of humans around the world suffer from an oral health problem that we all refer to as gingivitis.  This goes to show that this particular disease is quite too common among us.  A lot of medications and resolutions have been innovated to treat this disease but ironically, still a lot of people become victimized by it.  Despite its commonality, a lot of people are totally ignorant of what the disease is all about.  By this we mean that not everyone knows the symptoms, causes, and other treatments for gingivitis.  This is why, according to a research somewhere, almost eighty percent of adults catch gingivitis.

The only thing that can cause gingivitis is simply bacteria.  Now, there are various types of bacteria existing inside our body.  Lactobacillus, for example, is a form of bacteria that plays a vital role in human digestion.  Those kinds of microorganisms are usually referred to as good bacteria.  They do not cause any harm or complications; instead they help us in maintaining our health.  Bad bacteria, like plaque and tartar, are the ones that cause gingivitis.  We get these from the leftovers of the food that we ate that are stuck in our mouth for a long time.  When we do not rinse our mouth regularly, bad bacteria tend to propagate and their replication can cause a lot of damage to our oral cavity’s vital parts.

How are you able to figure out if you have gingivitis?  That is why it is important to list down common symptoms of gingivitis.  This disease is very sneaky; you won’t be able to feel its impact once it has gone severe.  The most common symptom of gingivitis would be the prevalence of halitosis.  This means that your breath releases an unpleasant scent.  When this happens, it could be that your gums have decayed and that is where the awful smell comes from.  Gums tend to swell a lot when someone has gingivitis too.  This becomes very prevalent to a point that the swelling is evident, particularly in your lower jaw line.  Gum sensitivity is also one clear indication of gingivitis.  By this, we refer to the instantaneous bleeding even at the smallest contact of the gums. So, do not mistake over brushing as the cause of your bleeding gums, it could be that they are already damaged and gingivitis is somewhere around the corner.

To treat gingivitis, you need to get rid of its cause.  As mentioned earlier, bad bacteria (in the form of plaque and tartar) cause gingivitis.  How do you get rid of it?  Regular oral hygiene habits should be kept at consistent levels to do so.  Brush your teeth at least twice a day.  If a tooth brush is unavailable, a dental floss would be an ideal substitute.  Just make sure that you keep on cleaning your mouth and gingivitis would not be much of an issue.  This is also an effective way to prevent gingivitis from coming back.

There are also other alternative healing procedures for this disease.  You can use medication, especially if the case is quite worse.  Natural remedies are readily available as well; they can be also used for resolving your problems.  But most importantly, you need to seek help from your dentist.  Make your consultations more regular in order to be able to figure out for yourself if you have been taking good care of your teeth.

The Cost of Gum Disease – Money and Health

The dental health condition which is known as gum disease involves the gums which provide structure and support to the teeth.  This is especially a dangerous disease especially for the teeth since the gum layer is the primary support system of the teeth.  Based on various researches, there are almost 40 million Americans that suffer from gum disease in an annual basis.  This means that the disease is a very prevalent type and that it can easily affect on person after the other.  Having a gum disease can lead to a legion of bad effects that vary from physical, social and emotional barriers.

Apart from that, gum disease can lead to other health problems that are far more difficult to resolve.  A research conducted by the Harvard Medical School Foundation has shown that men who suffer from gum disease have a sixty one percent chance of acquiring pancreatic cancer in the process.  Another study by the University of Liege in Belgium concluded that persons with heart problems also had periodontal issues.  This is an implication that the impact of gum disease is too immense that it should not be ignored.

Causes of gum disease may actually vary.  Sometimes, they are from natural causes – this in particular involves pregnant women and their hormonal activity.  However, there are two main and popular causes of gum disease.  The first one puts focus on the food intake.  Most people who catch gum disease have a strong liking for sweet and processed foods.  The other cause involves oral hygiene.  If a person has a very poor level of maintenance with regards to his or her dental health, it is most likely that dental diseases would be as frequent and prevalent as they are.

Treatment for gum disease, on the other hand also has variety.  For severe cases, there are treatments that are considered to be more costly since most of them are already surgical procedures.  These include laser therapy, root planning, and tooth extraction.  There are also natural remedies, which are based off from organic substances which provide you a safe and cheaper alternative to medication.  Using the leaves of rosemary to massage your gums can be a very helpful and effective way in alleviating this disease.

Other treatments involves changing your diet plan, opting for more nutritious food like fruits and vegetables or going on a soft diet wherein the types of food that you eat are not that difficult to chew.  Liquid diets have also been gaining popularity as a treatment for gum disease.  With this, we are able to realize that gum disease, when left unattended can be very bothersome.  And most importantly, it can be very costly so it would be best to fix it on its earliest stages to avoid further complications.
